Erin was so close, it wouldn’t be much longer now, even if she was the last one in the office to get there.

The other girls had completed their transformations last week, leaving her still unable to fulfil her true purpose like they had.

She’d been working at the young startup for a few years and things had been good, she’d moved up the ladder and become a manager, with a bright future ahead of her. Then LDM Inc. had swooped in and taken over the company, quickly making changes that she didn’t really understand but as manager had dutifully tried to implement.

New training programs, new dress codes, new work hours, new responsibilities, by the time she noticed that things were going in a strange direction, it was too late.

All the men, other than Kevin, the regional manager, had been fired. Several of the girls had already stopped referring to themselves as people and only accepted her instructions if she referred to them as “Drone Lisa”, or “Drone Kimberly”, or whatever.

Keven was standing in front of her now, talking away, but she didn’t hear him, instead static filled her ears.

“Drone Erin.” she heard and the static vanished. She stood at attention and focused on Kevin.

“Drone Erin is ready for instruction Sir.”

“Status report.” he commanded.

“All staff have completed their training Sir. 18 new drones are ready for deployment by LDM Inc. Sir.”

Kevin nodded and smiled, “And current status of Drone Erin?”

“Drone Erin is 80% complete Sir. Estimated time until Drone Erin is ready for deployment is 3 days Sir.”

“Good. Hold at 80%. You’ve done a great job here and LDM Inc. is quite impressed with your efforts. Report to HR and receive your new assignment.”

Erin walked off, outwardly showing no emotion, but inside, screaming for him to recall her and let her complete her transformation.

It wasn’t long before HR gave her the new assignment, LDM Inc. had just acquired a new company and they had assigned her to oversee the integration of it’s offices in the LDM Inc. family.

A shudder ran through her as she looked over the file that HR had given her. 150 staff, only 30 men, and no one over 30 years old. She was going to be managing the transformation of 120 new drones for Latex Drone Manufacturing Inc. and all she could think of was if it would be enough for LDM Inc. to let her finish her own.
