Tumblr has a new setting to turn off

General settings > privacy > better recommendations (uses your search history to show you more posts)

Damn. What part of “Let us opt-in to these changes!” does tumblr not understand?

Sadly few social media platforms understand that.

FYI…

I’m going one step farther here and going to say the associated update of the Android app has pretty much made it unusable.

The number of “recommended” posts is out of control.

To solve the problem, here’s what I recommend:

  1. Install Firefox.
  2. Install Ghostery.
  3. Go to tumblr.com in Firefox and login.
  4. Add Tumblr to your home screen as a PWA (via the little house with a plus symbol in your address bar).
  5. Close the webpage in Firefox and start it again from your home screen.

Voila, no ads or recommends, etc.

As a side benefit (at least as far as I’m concerned) you also get to see your reblog/likes in your timeline instead of on a separate screen.

You do loose infinite scroll, but that seems like a small price to pay.
